The name D L Bradley will certainly be known to most enthusiasts of the Southern Railway, indeed his locomotive histories still stand proud more than five decades since they were first published.

It was however an incomplete series, Part 3 of Locomotives of the Southern Railway featuring the history of the Southern Electric, Bulleid diesel shunter, Leader and main-line diesel electric locomotives was never released.

That is until now, when the manuscript was found by chance in consequence of a house clearance.

It is now time to complete a series that has long been anticipated.

1 review for Locomotives of the Southern Railway Part 3

  1. Stuart Johnson

It was a remarkable turn of events that brought to light the material to complete Bradley’s history of SR locomotives, and the decision to publish it in a format uniform with the earlier volumes in the series is much appreciated. As the author notes, this book deals with only twelve locomotives, and the material is at times a little stretched; in particular the account of the working life of diesel-mechanical locomotive 11001 is very sketchy, and if the opportunity had arisen to publish the book in the author’s lifetime, he would no doubt have dug deeper to flesh out the story.

Unfortunately the production standards of the book are not up to those of the earlier volumes: there are quite a lot of misprints, and the captions to the photographs are very cursory.
