Wheels turn full circle. Although my heart is in the north I now live in SECR territory in Southeast London within 50 miles of my birthplace on the Isle of Sheppey. Southern Times is a necessary part of my reading and research to understand the railways of Southern England, not only in commuterland but along the tentacles of the LSWR as it strove for supremacy over the arrogant self-confidence of the Great Way Round. For those that must follow that begotten path, “Western Times” is available! I have found so much to delight and surprise me in Southern Times, from the insights into Bulleid’s experiments, whether the singular double-deck coaches or the impractical Leaders attempting to apply diesel design principles to steam, through the erudition of SC Townroe to the delightful byways, typified by Colonel Stephen’s railways. Well illustrated and well written, Southern Times is thoroughly recommended.
