Description

‘The Atmospheric Southern’ will take you on a journey around the Southern, viewed through the cameras of a dozen or more eminent photographers. Starting at Victoria, we will go clockwise around Kent, Surrey and Sussex, before moving westwards to Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, the West of England and then back up the South Western main line to Waterloo, finally ending at Nine Elms shed just before the demise of steam in July 1967. There is also an extended feature on the railways around Redhill – a strategically important railway crossroads. Mostly steam, the subject matter includes a few diesels and electrics, while the extended captions give details of so much more visible in the pictures. All the images come from the Transport Treasury collections and many more are available direct from them.

1 review for The Atmospheric Southern

  1. 5 out of 5

    Derek Van Ryne

I bought this book a few weeks ago mainly because of the extended feature on Redhill with the photographs by Roy Hobbs. Roy Hobbs was a Reigatian like myself and I was fortunate enough to meet him on the odd occasion and get him to autograph the books of his that I had. Redhill MPD was my local engine shed and I spent many happy Saturdays and school holidays bunking the shed and standing on the country end of Redhill station platforms 1 & 2. Those photos of Redhill and the lines to both Reading and Tonbridge were pure nostalgia for me. Being a Southern Region fan the rest of the book was also of great interest. I would recommend this book to anyone who, like me, has a love of the Southern Region in the days of steam. As well as being a fan of the Southern Region I am also a big fan of the Scottish Region. As a result of that I am looking forward to buying a book called “The Atmospheric Scottish” !!
