Description

This issue continues the trend to focus away from the West Country with a photographic exploration of the Welsh Marches. Keeping trains on the move is considered with a survey that displays the remarkable diversity in GWR signal box architecture and another article investigates a rare and little-known type of signal.

Seasonally appropriate for this issue, there is an extended account of the challenges of working services under extreme adversity during the brutal winter of 1962/ 3. Enthusiasts of a certain vintage will recall how the snow and numbing cold arrived just after Christmas and seemed intent on remaining for ever yet against the odds, railwayman succeeded in keeping trains running to sustain a vital service. In contrast, there is an enquiry into the oddities of catering vehicle movements on Sundays.

The usual fare is again present. The Dick Riley section looks at tender locomotives working backwards. The Great Western Trust is back with another bulletin, as is the next instalment of the Pannier Story (there is a long way to go with that one).

Also, there is a second Riley album (this time commentary-free) to provide a foretaste of a new initiative from the publisher. No need for words as the images speak for themselves!
