Description
This book was written to complement the author’s five-part series, The Railways Of North East Lincolnshire, A Celebration Of Steam. It is not part of the series but a standalone review of the first generation of the diesels that replaced steam operations in Lincolnshire. A review of diesels that themselves have now mostly passed into memory.
Concentrating on the area to the east of Wrawby Junction, Barnetby, the book gives a comprehensive pictorial history of diesel operations from the mid 1950’s through to the end of the 20th century in the area around Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Immingham and New Holland. In part 5 of the Celebration Of Steam series, the author expanded his story beyond Wrawby Junction and south of Willoughby on the East Lincs line. This has continued with this book and Skegness, Boston, Lincoln, Gainsborough and Scunthorpe are also covered.
The book starts with a brief history of the development of the diesel locomotive and what might have been if the LNER had extended its electrification plans followed by a candid look at the final steam locomotives built for British Railways. This is followed by chapters reviewing diesel operations in Lincolnshire.
Illustrated with over 400 photographs, the vast majority of which have never been published, this book is an important steeping stone in the history of railways in North East Lincolnshire and is a sad reminder of what has been lost, even during the diesel ea. The author believes in telling the story through well captioned and detailed pictures, other text is kept to a minimum.
