Description

Although Hugh Gallie Scott (HGS), the author of this story, followed a career in law, for the majority of his life, he had a deep interest in railways and, in particular, the steam locomotives that frequented it. This book is an autobiography, taking in the early days of his railway interest, in the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods of time, and including accounts of his railway travels abroad, in countries as diverse as Canada (where HGS lived for much of his life), Russia and Greece. It also includes accounts of railways involved in war and in tense domestic situations.

HGS’ passion for his subject is deep and comes to life through his story. He has strong opinions on a number of subjects; however, his admiration for the steam railway and those who ran it is loyal and unwavering. A selection of appropriate photographs complements the remarkable text, whilst a series of maps and appendices gives some background information to that contained within the original story.
