Description

‘Terry Nicholls’ aka ‘Saltash Auto to the High Speed Train’ is 108 sides of unashamed nostalgia.

Starting his railway career in Plymouth in the late 1950s, Terry progressed through the clerical grades in Carriage & Wagon and then Motive Power at the ideal time to witness the changeover from Steam to Diesel. He later moved on to a similar role at Bristol before taking a job in the Control office literally having his finger on the pulse when it came to change and with-it unusual workings.

In the Bristol area Terry was a popular speaker, illustrating his talks with a superb collection of colour slides some of which have been included in this new book.

The railway at its best, and on occasions at its worse is described by Terry but always in a positive sense which will leave the reader feeling as if he was actually there on the ground as well. If ever there was a railway book that was a ‘page turner’ this must surely be it.

How could I resist this book? Though born in Cornwall, I grew up in Plymouth -or to more precise, Laira. This is a lovely book with some great illustrations and amusing anecdotes. Many years ago I corresponded briefly with Terry Nicholls. I too had noticed where the big hole in the wall of Laira Roundhouse had been patched with new brick and no one seemed to know why. As detailed in the book it was Terry who solved the mystery. It was sad to read at the end of the book of his death but good to know that he had seen his book published and his knowledge shared. It is giving me enormous pleasure. Graham Thorne

I knew Terry through the Railway Correspondence & Travel Society, when I was Chairman of the South Wales Branch I booked him to do several presentations to the branch, what a joy they were, super photographs and wonderful anecdotes, the book may be described in the same way. I can heartily recommend the book to anyone who has an interest in the Western Region of BR or enjoys reading about the people who worked on BR. I was not disappointed.
