Oerlikon Twilight
The LNWR/LMS Watford and North London DC Lines in the early BR era

With the exciting array of steam power to be seen on the West Coast Main Line, railway photographers of the 1950s largely ignored the relatively mundane procession of EMUs on the Watford DC lines, so photographs of them are not particularly common. These trains were formed of the LNWR Oerlikon and LMS Compartment stock. Thankfully, The Transport Treasury has acquired enough photos of these venerable units to make up into a book. Also portrayed are the early years of the Eastleigh-built units that replaced them (later Class 501). There are also a few photos of the Lancaster- Morecambe-Heysham line: the connection is explained in the text!

These trains were formed of the LNWR Oerlikon and LMS Compartment stock. Thankfully, The Transport Treasury has acquired enough photos of these venerable units to make up into a book. The “Oerlikon Twilight” book is an excellent historical record of the Oerlikon EMU’s that ran on London North Western electrified lines.
Having been an engineering apprentice at Stonebridge Park Repair Shops that encompassed both the servicing depots at Mitre Bridge and Croxley Green together with Wolverton Works, where the EMU’s received their overhauls and new paint, both to their exteriors as well as the interiors.
The EMU’s were taken to Wolverton by steam locomotives, though the motor coaches had their bogies removed and replaced with accommodation bogies. The motor bogies plus their traction motors were all overhauled at Stonebridge Park.
