Description
Serving only a limited intermediate population scattered amongst a handful of towns in the Scottish Borders the Waverley route was always a difficult line to work and was never a great money spinner. However, the short sighted closure of the route in 1969 left a vast swath of country isolated with two of the larger towns having the dubious distinction of being further from the national rail network than any other settlement of comparable size in the UK. With the opening of the Borders Railway in 2015 part of this isolation has been rectified and there are hopes that further extensions will follow leading ultimately perhaps to the reinstatement of the whole 98 mile route. In this volume we feature images of the line in the 1950s and 1960s before the axe fell.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading through it, the photographs that were well chosen to illustrate the railway are excellent they really give a feel for the environment surrounding the line, they portray the locomotives in their working and struggling through the countryside, brilliant. The captions were relevant and informative, altogether an excellent purchase, I’m looking forward to seeing your sequel, keep them coming.

Once again TTP has put together an excellent selection of photographs showing stations and infrastructure and trains in the landscape, not just close ups of locomotives. The compiler has taken great pains to trawl many of the Transport Treasury collections to assemble a comprehensive view of this iconic route.
I look forward to more of the same.

A great reference book of the old Edinburgh to Carlisle, North British Railway Route. Full of many unpublished photographs of many classes.
The big LNER Pacific’s, the V2’s alongside the Glens and Scots and many many more, including the odd diesel.. A great book for Signal box details and a good coverage of the whole route showing many structures and stations. A refreshing new look using Transport Treasury Archive, Mr Grayer has done the old line proud with a plethora of fascinating new material and historical facts.
At a sensible price this paperback offers great value for money and is worth shelf space on both the modeller and the enthusiast’s bookcase
Five Stars for a well researched and interesting look at the old Waverley mainline.
