The three East Coast counties of Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland were served by the North Eastern region of British Railways from 1948 until its amalgamation with the Eastern region in 1967. Principal among the 30 or so resorts covered in this volume are the tourist hot spots of Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough, Whitby, Redcar and Whitley Bay. Using the vast archive of the Transport Treasury, images of trains serving these resorts have been combined with period advertisements extolling the virtues of each destination. A special feature covers some of the extensive excursion traffic to Scarborough which also benefitted from one of the named expresses to serve the seaside resorts of the region namely “The Scarborough Flyer”. Also featured is the short lived “Tees – Thames” express running to the Teesside resorts of Redcar and Saltburn. The dedicated station of Filey Camp catering for the adjacent Butlin’s holiday camp is also covered.
