Glasgow
Price range: £15.50 through £16.50
‘Glasgow’ is one of a series of 12 books being released in 2025 showcasing railway works and centres to commemorate ‘Railway 200’.
As Britain celebrates 200 years of rail travel, we can reflect on Glasgow’s role as the manufacturing powerhouse of the British Empire, shipping locomotives and rolling stock around the globe, as well as supplying domestic railways. As Scotland’s principal railway centre, Glasgow has always played a major role in British railway history, with its four terminus stations, major railway works, multiple engine sheds, its distinctive underground ‘subway’, and the unique Bennie Railplane. This book attempts to show illustrate some of the more interesting aspects of Glasgow’s railway scene, from glamorous Anglo-Scottish expresses and the iconic pre-war ‘streamliners’ to humble freight trains; and from magnificent Victorian termini to the modernised, rationalised electric railway.
