Many books have been published about the London Routemaster, but this is like none that have been seen before. By the early 2000s the Routemaster had been plying the streets of London for almost 50 years, but the challenge of maintaining intensive services with these ageing vehicles was beginning to show. When it was inevitably announced that the Routemaster (RM) would be withdrawn from regular service by the end of 2005, two photographers who had grown up with these buses resolved to make a visual record of their final years in the London environment.

Between 2004 and 2007, Tony Green and Adrian Knowles roamed the capital in all seasons and all weathers, seeking out the routes on which the Routemasters were still in use. The objective was to chronicle not only the buses, but also the part they played in the lives of the passengers and crews, as well as the streetscape as it then existed.

While there is much to interest transport enthusiasts including special workings, unusual liveries and scenes at garages together with many of the crews, the emphasis throughout has been on using only the very best photographs, mixing portraits of the buses with wider scenes where the bus is just one element. Both in front line service and in subsequent operation of heritage routes, the Routemaster is portrayed as a London landmark in its own right, seen among the many architectural and topographical landmarks of the capital. In other words, a true ‘London landmark among London landmarks’.
