The Travels of a Yorkshire Newspaper Photographer

This is a book with a difference. Within 112 pages of art paper printed illustrations we have examples of the work of a Yorkshire Newspaper Photographer who travelled both within his home county and sometimes beyond. Neither is it set within a specific period but instead there are images of everyday and unique scenes, events and incidents covering both the immediate pre-war and then the post war period almost up to the demise of steam.
Press photographers were invariably equipped with the best equipment and had an uncanny knack of sniffing out what was either to take place or indeed had happened – likely through cultivating the friendship of a railwayman or two! As such they would appear on scene at both the good and the bad times whereas today the ‘negative’ incidents would be strictly taboo to most.
The result is a book of images taken through the lens of a skilled individual able to make his audience take notice. RAILWAY MEMORIES. The Travels of a Yorkshire Newspaper Photographer will certainly do the same for the reader.

The Travels of a Yorkshire newspaper photographer is a good quality publication printed on quality paper. All the photos are described in great detail. It is nice to have photos of some of the backwater places in Yorkshire which are not always fashionable but show how the railways just managed to survive in many rural places that didn’t normally see a cameraman. 5 star rating for me.

I am happy to offer a short review of both the title in particular (Railway Memories: The Travels of a Yorkshire Newspaper Photographer, by Alan C Butcher) and The Transport Treasury in general. The book is great value, at the reduced price all the more, but it would have been great value at the full price too. The photos are intriguing and very original too – e.g. the ones of Leeds Central on Page 26ff. (great for modelling!) or the one of Morecambe Promenade (I thought I had seen all possible angles of the station) on page 40 which is a beauty – and the captions are informative, and they tell a lot more than you would usually expect such as the one on Garsdale on page 18 which informs that the “station waiting room was once used for Anglican Church services.” Re The Transport Treasury, they provide a great service and the books arrive safely packaged and in reasonable time, meaning that any delays are only due to the incompetence of German customs.
